Most point-of-sale systems are built for a till, a barcode, and a fixed price. That covers a lot of retail. It doesn't cover cannabis, and the gap isn't obvious from a features list - it shows up in the first week of actually trading.
Pricing that isn't per-unit
Flower is priced by weight. Edibles and pre-rolls are priced per unit. A generic POS assumes one model or forces you to fake the other - weighing flower into fixed "SKUs" that don't match what's actually on the scale, or manually recalculating totals at the till. A cannabis-specific system prices both in the same catalogue without the workaround.
Age and ID checks built into the sale
A general POS treats age verification as a manual step a cashier remembers to do, or doesn't. It's not part of the transaction. In a compliance-sensitive category, that's a gap - not because staff are careless, but because a busy till is exactly where manual steps get skipped. Built into the sale means it can't be skipped.
Consignment stock
A lot of cannabis retail runs on consignment: a vendor supplies stock, gets paid as it sells, and the store never owns it outright. General retail POS systems have no concept of this - stock is either yours or it isn't. Tracking consignment balances outside the POS, in a spreadsheet running in parallel, is where reconciliation errors start.
Loyalty that matches how cannabis customers actually buy
Generic loyalty programs assume roughly similar purchases at roughly regular intervals. Cannabis customers buy across wildly different price points and product types in the same visit. A points system needs to handle that without the store manually adjusting every transaction.
What this adds up to
None of these gaps are visible on a spec sheet. A general POS will demo fine and sell fine on paper. The difference shows up in the first stock take, the first consignment reconciliation, the first time a cashier has to choose between speed and doing the ID check properly. Budstack is built around these specifics rather than adapted to them after the fact - see the actual till rather than take our word for it.
