Loyalty, gift cards, and promo codes that update automatically

A punch card works until it doesn't - lost, forgotten at home, or simply not brought back. A spreadsheet of points works until the second till or the second store makes it impossible to keep current. Loyalty only holds up as a real program once it's tracked automatically, off the sale that just happened, rather than a manual step someone has to remember.

What automatic actually means here

  • Points, tiers, and referrals that update the moment a sale goes through the till - not at end of day, not manually
  • Gift cards a store can issue and redeem without a separate card-printing vendor
  • Promo codes created and retired whenever needed, not locked to a marketing platform's release schedule
  • All of it tied to the same customer record as their purchase history - not a second account they have to be found or matched by phone number

Why this matters more for cannabis retail specifically

Paid social and search ads aren't an option for cannabis brands - Google, Meta, and TikTok all ban the category outright. That pushes more of the marketing job onto the channels a store actually owns, and loyalty is one of the few that rewards a customer for coming back rather than trying to find a new one every time.

A referral program only works if it's easy to run - a code a customer can actually share, tracked back to them automatically, not a manual note in a till system that nobody checks. The same goes for a gift card bought as a one-off present: if redeeming it needs a phone call to head office, it stops being a program and starts being a workaround.

What breaks without it

Multi-store operators feel this first. A points balance that only exists at the store where it was earned isn't a loyalty program, it's a local habit - a customer who buys at two of your locations should see one balance, not two. That only happens when loyalty lives in the same admin console as everything else, not bolted on as a separate tool per store.
