Turning a restock into a message customers actually get

A restock, a new drop, a limited batch back on the shelf - these are exactly the moments a customer wants to hear about immediately, and exactly the moments most stores are slowest to communicate. By the time a WhatsApp broadcast goes out or a customer happens to check Instagram, the batch that sold out fast the first time has often sold out again before the message even reached them.

What a push notification actually needs to work

  • Sent from the same console the store already runs on - not a separate app or a marketing platform bought just for this
  • Triggered off the same stock data that decides when to reorder in the first place, so a restock notification and the restock itself aren't two disconnected steps
  • Delivered to a customer's own installed app, not dependent on an algorithm deciding who sees a post
  • Immediate - the value of a restock alert drops fast, measured in hours, not days

Why this is one of the few channels left

Google, Meta, and TikTok all ban paid cannabis advertising outright, which rules out boosting a restock post or running a paid campaign around a new drop. A push notification doesn't need a platform's permission - it goes straight from the store to a customer who already installed the app, which makes it one of the few channels a cannabis retailer can actually rely on for time-sensitive news.

That timing problem connects directly back to reordering stock without guesswork - the same sales velocity and stockout data that tells a store when to reorder is what should be triggering the notification the moment new stock lands, rather than a manual step someone remembers to do after the fact.

What it looks like done well

A customer who bought a strain that sold out gets notified the moment it's back, from the app they already have installed, without a store owner manually compiling a list of who to tell. That's the difference between a restock being an event a store announces and a restock being something a customer simply finds out about in time to act on it.
